The On & Ons | The Junkyard

A power pop/rock/garage combo with an impeccable pedigree, The On and Ons arrived in 2015 - launching their debut CD album, "It's The On and Ons Calling", on Citadel.

Glenn Morris (lead vocals, guitar) and his brother Brian (drums), of The Zeros (Aust), toured Australia and the US in 2012 as members of The Paul Collins Beat. Following that successful stint they were encouraged to record their own album of Glenn's original songs. The resultant album "It's The On And Ons Calling" was produced and engineered by legendary Australian guitarist Dennis Wilson, of Khavas Jute fame.

The On and Ons are rounded out with Clyde Bramley (bass – ex Hoodoo Gurus). Jon Roberts (guitar – ex The Barbarellas) left the band in early 2018 and the band continues as a trio.

The 11 songs are rock/power pop with exceptional harmonies and classic instrumentation, and it has been receiving rave reviews around the world.

The Slow Downs | The Junkyard

The Slowdowns are one of Sydneys most iconic Country bands. Over the last 15 years they have developed a unique mash up of country, punk, blues and funk presented in their own inimitable “hillbilly disco” fashion. Blessed with great outfits, stage presence and a dark laconic sense of humour The Slowdowns are the band for all occasions that is guaranteed to deliver. As the saying goes, "everyone loves the Slowdowns".

Wanted for murdering the hits, butchering country classics and spicing it up with their original originals the Slowdowns have been spotted at Dashville Skyline, the Peats Ridge Festival, The Wharf Theatre, Carriageworks, Marrickville Bowlo, the Red Rattler, Shady Pines the Junkyard and even Tamworth Country Music Festival. They held a weekly residency downstairs at the Sando (RIP) for over two years and had the sad honour of being the last band to play that classic stage.

Perhaps you chanced upon them at Coonmable Rodeo, Nymagee, the Port of Bourke, Brewarrinna, Katoomba and Karuah RSL’S. Currently at large somewhere in the Silver City the Slowdowns have been sighted recently at the Unicorn Hotel in Paddington and The Old Canberra Inn.

Featuring some of Sydney’s busiest musos, members of the Slowdowns have, over the years, shared the stage with: Louis Tillet, The Paper Scissors, Bluejuice, Juke Baritone, the Re-mains, Jeff lang, Ian Rilen, Toxic Vomit, Jesse Younan, Leah Flanagan, Dirty Deeds, Tania Bowra, Charlie McMahon, Rahtzee, Neil Murray, Dog Trumpet, Adam Young, Jason Walker, the Hoo Haas, Pigfoot Fever, and many, many, many more.

James Thomson & Conor McCamley | The Junkyard

n his short career, Australian musician James Thomson has developed from a promising talent into an artist of rare and unique ability. Thomson's obvious gift for crafting uncomplicated, beautifully realised songs has led both press and fellow artists to cite him as one of the finest young songwriters in the Country. After being ‘discovered’ in 2013 by Stuart Coupe (ex-Paul Kelly/Hoodoo Gurus manager), James was quickly signed to Coupe’s record label and a self-titled debut album released later that same year. The album’s irresistible mix of classic storytelling set against homespun folk and blues melodies gathered high praise from the likes of Peter Jesperson and Bernard Zuel - and soon landed Thomson tours alongside Mark Olson (The Jayhawks), Simone Felice (The Felice Brothers), Robert Ellis and The Gin Club.

Thomson’s second album Cold Moon was released in 2015 and provided a stunning indication of his rapid development as an artist. Ghostly guitars and organs now floated through the mix, while Thomson’s earthy vocals and vivid lyrics drew worthy comparisons to Gene Clark, Neil Young and Bobby Charles. Since the release of Cold Moon, James and his band have toured Nationally and Internationally - their reputation as an exceptional live act further enhanced after turning in stunning performances at Nannup Music Festival, The Gumball Festival, Leaps and Bounds, Bridgetown Blues Festival and Dashville Skyline.

In February 2018 Thomson recorded his third album at Melbourne’s Union Street Studios with Engineer Rodger Bergodaz at the helm. In just six days, Thomson and an all-star band featuring Steve Hadley (Paul Kelly, Tex, Don and Charlie), Shane Reilly (Lost Ragas), Tracy McNeil and Sean McMahon crafted a truly special album and a superbly assured nod to the 1970’s Country-Soul/Rock and Roll sound perfected by artists like The Faces and Neil Young. Thomson’s superb writing and musicianship should have already made him known to a wider audience but the release of his eagerly awaited third album in late 2018 is set to make sure his mark on Australian music is a permanent one.

Joined by Newcastle's Conor McCamley as support, this just tops off a beautiful lineup for your Sunday afternoon.

Greg Nunan & The General Jacksons

Freshly back from playing 50 shows with the Blues Machine in steamy Singapore, Greg Nunan is rounding up his Generals to bunker down for album number two.

Based in Sydney, the band have been quiet on local shows with Nunan going overseas doing 80 shows across Central America and Singapore in 2018. “It was exciting to play my style of blues to the American crowds and get such a great response. I had never played a cruise ship and going to places like Cuba,

Honduras, Mexico, and Key West was exciting and humbling. And to rekindle the grooves with the Blues Machine and my peeps in Singapore was soup for the soul."

Playing five shows a week at the famous Crazy Elephant for ten weeks takes your playing to new heights too. But there’s nothing like coming home to your family and your band”. Greg explains.

Nunan has a formidable band with Liam Chandler on drums, Mark Holbert on bass and Felix Akurangi on guitar. In 2017, Liam toured with Ida Nielsen (Prince’s bass player) on her Australian leg but was happy to return to the Generals as she missed the banter and mateship.

This will be a tight-knit Friday show of the highest caliber. Come and grab a bit of dinner & a drink and enjoy yourself.

Kristen Lee Morris | Hillbilly Blues at The Junkyard

Kristen Lee Morris | Hillbilly Blues at The Junkyard

Real music emanates from the guts and the heart, it’s infused with soul and passion. Sometimes it’s tender, sometimes it’s raw but most importantly it makes a connection that runs from the author’s pen and guitar strings, down wires and cables and through the ether to the listeners’ ears. Thoughts and ideas, wild and considered, transported via melodies and rhythms from heart to heart.

Kristen Lee Morris has built a career on writing, singing and playing guitar in just this fashion. It’s blues music at its core but with a freedom and range that also draws on country and folk styles. Whether it’s a lonesome harmonica drawing a line back to Neil Young, loose-limbed boogie guitar steeped in both the sound of the blues masters and more recent exponents such as Chris Whitley, or the heartfelt poetry from documentarians of heartache such as Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle – you can hear it all in Morris’ special blend.

“I grew up with guitars around me my whole life. I was raised on blues-based music like Hendrix and Clapton and then found my way back to deeper blues. I got more into songwriting as I got older, it seemed a natural move towards alt-country and writing stories that don’t always fit into the blues structure.”

In 2014 Morris captured his hard swamp blues on his Kasey Chambers-produced debut album Ruins with songs such as ‘Bury My Bones’ and the title track hitting that sweet spot between stomping wooden floorboard grooves and heady melodies. Stages were shared with the likes of Chambers, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Charlie Parr, The Fumes and Hayes Carll before Morris and partner Sarah Humphreys brought their Eagle & The Wolf collaboration to life with a rich and soulful Americana album of the same name.

2018 was the year of Hillbilly Blues, Morris’ second solo album and one that eloquently encapsulates the spirit and verve of everything he’s absorbed as a musician and songwriter – from the eviscerating guitar on ‘I’ve Got Nothing But I’m Free’, to the heartwarming duet with Humphreys on ‘Eagle Sun Wolf Moon’ and the sharply penned opening track ‘Cowboy’, chosen by Henry Wagons as his local song of the year on Double J’s Tower Of Song. Hillbilly Blues, produced by Bill Chambers, and recorded with a live band in two days, captures all the raw swagger and charm of Morris in full flight.

“‘Cowboy’ is such a great song, a great exposé of modern-day urban Americana from someone who is doubtless and authentic”
Henry Wagons

“Morris blew me away with his raw blues and alt-country that kicked up metaphorical dust while at the same time cutting an emotional line straight to the heart.”

Dirty, dark, folk rock is what Melody does best.

After delivering one of the most acclaimed Australian debut albums of recent times The Hurting Scene, Melody Pool returned in 2016 with her stunning sophomore album Deep Dark Savage Heart.

Deep Dark Savage Heart painted a dark insight into a personal place in Melody’s mind; guiding the listener to confronting depths “I feel like I’ve really stood my ground with this record. I don’t ever want to make an album filled with pop hits. It’s always going to be me playing guitar and singing the truth”.

Following the release tour for Deep Dark Savage Heart, Melody went on to share a more literal account of her experiences when she featured on Australian Story in 2017. At this time, Melody announced she was to take a break from music to focus on rehabilitating her mental health.

She's ready to put on a hell of a show for you in Maitland at The Junkyard, so take a deep breath, mark it down on your busy social calendars and round up your crew.
